The question has been raised, and we believe it deserves a factual response.

While philanthropy should not be confused with responsible representation, nor charitable gestures taken as proof of legislative capacity, it is equally important to document the contributions individuals have made to their communities.

Against this backdrop, we present some of the humanitarian interventions and behind the scenes gestures of QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman towards the people of Kogi East, initiatives that have received little or no public attention.

EDUCATION AND STUDENT SUPPORT

1. Payment of JAMB registration fees for over 2,000 students across the nine local government areas of Kogi East.

2. Additional JAMB registration support for 100 students from Bassa.

3. Back to School financial assistance of ₦7,000 per beneficiary.

4. Commitment to supporting outstanding beneficiaries who secure admission into tertiary institutions.

30. Assistance to Christian organisations and other community institutions.

GRASSROOTS HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE

31. Financial support for individuals and families facing hardship.

32. Assistance to vulnerable households through humanitarian interventions.

33. Support for women whose businesses provide for their families.

34. Community focused interventions outside the immediate demands of electoral campaigns.

These are some of the interventions mentioned in our previous discussions and reports. The list distinguishes direct humanitarian assistance from employment opportunities and infrastructure projects. Some figures require further documentation to establish whether they represent separate programmes or different editions of the same initiative.

OUR POSITION REMAINS CLEAR: Philanthropy is commendable, but public office demands more. The people of Kogi East deserve not only compassion and assistance, but also responsive legislation, effective oversight, accountability, strategic representation and a clear development agenda.

The record of humanitarian service is worth documenting. The capacity to represent the people must also be examined on its own merits.
